0Best of 1991 (2/2)
³..continues from previous article.²
¹Queen Latifah²'s new record is somewhat different comparing to the earlier
one. It has been made with a new producer group called ¹The Flavour
Unit². It hasn't been so big success than the first one. I didn't like
this one so much since it features some really unrap tracks which are mostly
singin', but it's not totally lost since there are 2 pretty good tracks:
³Fly Girl and Latifah's Had It Up 2 Here.²
Naturally there were sum other great records like ¹3rd Bass²: Derelicts Of
Dialect. ¹Brand Nubians² new record, remix of ¹Gangstar²'s record and some
soundtracks. But I can't give you report of them since I haven't heard
them compeletely.
Some disappointments were ¹Digital Underground²'s new record, ¹2 Live
Crew²'s new one and ¹Big Daddy Kane²'s new plate.
And now to the newcomers which there has been a lot of in last year. Let's
start from the west coast of USA. There rose to the people's knowledge a man
who calls himself ¹Del Tha Funkie Homosapien². His first plate called
I Wish My Brother George Was Here is produced by the ¹Boogiemen²
(the same dudes who produced Ice Cube's new record). DTF is no beginner in
the rap-scene - he has been working with Ice Cube on his records and decided
to put out his own. The sounds are much Compton styled with a lot of samples
and totally funny lyrics. All the tracks are pretty good, some of them
repeat each other, but the whole package is totally cool to be a first
record. Some of the greater tracks were: ³Darksin Grils, Mistadobbalina and
Sunny Meadowz².
Another newcomer from the west coast was ¹Cypress Hill². This band's music
is Latino rap, maybe a bit like ³Kid Frost²'s style but more modern and
Compton influenced. Their lyrics are mixed latino accented english and
spanish. The stories are pretty violent and a bit aggressive towards the
L.A Police Department. I believe that Ice Cube has helped them out a bit but
there is no mention of it. Their debut single which also climbed quite high
on the rap charts is ³How Could I Just Kill A Man². Other good tracks are
³Hand On The Pump, Stoned Is The Way Of The Walk and Latin Lingo.²
Allright let's move out to the eastern coast of USA, and to be more accurate
to New Jersey, the hometown of the year's newcomer ¹Naughty By Nature².
Their debut album is called O.P.P which is also name of their first hit.
N.B.N's record is also produced by The Flavour Unit and Queen Latifah, who
also appears on one track in the record. Their sound is really smooth with
strong piano samples and base beats. This may sound a bit old and simple but
it's everything but that. Lyrics are basic stories of life in the ghetto (as
they say themself). ³Music Television² made their own version of the song
O.P.P titled You Down With Mtv with the same sounds but different lyrics.
Other great tunes are: ³Ghetto Bastard, Guard Ya Grill, Yoke The Joker.²
All the tunes are fitted to the same mould, so there could have been a little
bit different style tunes too.
Ok, now to the last newcomer which is the weirdest one. They are from
Brooklyn, New York and they are the ¹Black Sheep². They are new members in
the Native Tongues family and are the black sheep of the family in a total
meaning of the word. N.T bands usually make "nice" rap-music; no curse
words, no violent things etc. But Sheep's music is not like this. Their
lyrics are pervert and weird. Their sounds are something that nobody has
done before (dog barking etc.). The tracks are different from each other
so you surely dont't getbored while listening these guys. Some good
tracks: ³Flavour Of The Month, The Choise and Similak Child.²
Well here it was the best of 1991. ³NOTICE²: This article is based on my
own opinion so some people might disagree with me. If you have anything
to complain: send your letters to some addresses of FW where they are
delivered to me. Thanx to Shade/Sonic.
